Students are asked to make sure they have a book to read. Time will often be given at the start of English class to read or write. Students need to have a coil ring notebook, duotang, and binder for this course.

LITERATURE CIRCLE NOVEL STUDIES. Students will be independently reading a novel and meeting weekly with a small group to discuss questions, connections, responses, and a summary of the assigned section. At the end students will complete a package that summarizes characters, conflict, setting, climax and resolution. Students will hand in their work every Friday. Copy of Lit circle package Schedule (by these dates students need to have read the assigned chapters and completed the questions/responses): Week 1: April 12 Week 2: April 19 Week 3: April 26 Week 4: May 3 Week 5: May 10 Week 6: May 17 Week 7/8: May 31 (final "end package" due) February/March, 2024 TWISTED FAIRY TALE unit. We will be writing fiction stories based on well known fairy tales or fables, but with a twist! Students will use well known stories as a pattern or a starter idea. They will create their own version that may differ in plot, characters, or setting. Each week we will be reading through the novel "Iqbal" as a class. Students will respond through summary, connections, predictions, and other activities. The novel response package can be downloaded here. The novels we use are a class set and stay at school, but students can sign a personal copy out from the library if they need to do homework, or they can access an online version - I can't post it here, but upon request I will share with students via a Google doc. Final project and presentations due Fri., Dec.8 Oct. 16-20 - final project EXTREME writing unit: Car ad. Due Oct. 23. Description: write a car ad using the techniques we have learned in this unit (simile, metaphor, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, descriptive word choice, imagery).
